At the initiative of the Parents Association of the Port-Gentil school, commonly called "Ecole Mixte", the management of the school and the NGO Agir pour le Handicap à l'École organized an awareness campaign on the theme of the fight against violence in schools.
For five days, Annie Edwige Adanhodou, president of the NGO, and her team spoke, in turn, to the teaching staff, pre-primary and primary school students and parents.
Corporal punishment and coercive methods are still used by parents or some teachers or supervisors as educational tools, the NGO Agir pour le Handicap à l'École wants to promote, instead, positive education.
It is, explained Annie Edwige Adanhodou, an educational approach that focuses on the strengths and positive behaviors of children, instead of focusing on their mistakes or defects. She is based on the principle that children respond better to encouragement, praise and rewards than to punishment or negative criticism.
She illustrated her point with some examples, including turning commands into awareness tools. Thus:
- "Stop swinging in your chair" becomes "What are you risking by swinging in your chair?";
- "Stay seated!" becomes "What are you doing standing up?
- You will finish your work at recess" becomes "How will you get your work done?
Positive pedagogy and positive parenting then appear as more constructive forms of communication that teachers should develop with their students or parents with their children.
