Every child has an inherent right to life, survival and development (article 6), and to the highest attainable standard of health (article 24). Although remarkable progress has been made in the last three decades (decrease in the number of children dying before the age of 5 from 12.5 million in 1990 to 5.2 million in 2019), it is still not enough. In 2019 alone, about 14,000 under-five deaths occurred daily, and if current trends continue, between 2020 and 2030, 48 million children, half of them newborns, will die before the age of five. Many of these children will die from diseases that can be prevented or treated if they receive affordable, quality care. UNICEF advocates for universal health coverage so that every child can survive and thrive.
